Orlando is a Hub for Simulation Technology in Multibillion-Dollar Defense Sector

Orlando’s tech landscape is experiencing a significant surge with defense giants leveraging advanced simulation tools for their cutting-edge projects. Lockheed Martin is leading the way, incorporating their digital twin technology, the Advanced Rapid Integration Simulation Environment (ARISE), into their Missiles and Fire Control initiatives.

The defense sector’s embrace of simulation technology is evident in the recent announcements of substantial contracts where such advancements are integral. For instance, Northrop Grumman’s development of the Integrated Battle Command System was crucial in simulating defense scenarios for national security. This work forms part of a broader $1.4 billion contract awarded in 2021.

Similarly, the renewal of Northrop Grumman’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense Weapon System for up to $3.29 billion underscores the pivotal role of simulation in modern defense contracts. George Cheros, CEO of the National Center for Simulation, notes that major corporations like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, often categorized as “original equipment manufacturers,” are deploying simulation technology to enhance their product offerings.

The trend towards digital foundations in defense contracts is reflected in the Department of Defense’s preference for “start digital” approaches. With Central Florida’s growing defense presence, companies in the region are frequently involved in these contracts, distributing work across their various locations.

Among these, Leidos Holdings secured a decade-long Army contract valued at $7.9 billion, where simulation will be key in development and engineering efforts. Collins Aerospace also landed a $280 million deal incorporating simulation for various military and defense services.

While companies are generally discreet about their simulation activities, Lockheed Martin openly shared the use of ARISE across new and legacy projects, illustrating the strategic importance of simulation in defense operations.

Orlando’s role as a burgeoning hub for simulation is reinforced by a significant workforce in the sector, contributing to substantial economic activity. The region is attractive for simulation work due to the military-focused Central Florida Tech Grove and its proximity to the University of Central Florida, fostering a thriving environment for DoD collaborations.

The figures are telling: Orlando businesses have reportedly garnered trillions from government defense contracts over two decades, with a considerable portion attributed to the simulation industry. The exact impact of simulation on this enormous revenue is challenging to pinpoint, but it’s undeniable that it has become a cornerstone of digital development in defense.

In sum, Orlando is not just a tourist destination but a burgeoning nucleus for simulation technology, drawing defense contracts and fostering innovation that could shape the future of global defense strategies.
